The Commercial Appeal, Memphis select Harland Simon’s drive upgrade program. Chicago, IL 22nd August 2007

Following on from the success at Times Herald Record-Middletown, NY, The Commercial Appeal has selected Harland Simon to complete their drives upgrade program. In 2005 Harland Simon converted the drives on their first two presses of their four press facility. The latest conversion will be carried out in the fall, with all presses fully converted by the end of the year. The upgrade will replace the remaining obsolete Fincor dc drives with supportable industry standard dc drives. Each press line will be controlled by a state-of-the-art ‘non-proprietary’ PLC and an HMI for setting adjustment and diagnostic display. All new diagnostic routines will be incorporated into Harland Simons existing maintenance systems and reports.

Steve Tomb, Director of Operations at Memphis commented, “We are looking forward to completing our drives upgrade project and appreciate the professionalism and quality of Harland Simon and their control systems.”

At all times, the existing system will remain operational until the new drives are fully tested and integrated into their current Harland Simon press controls [installed 2000]. The solution is based on techniques that have been successfully developed for the replacement of drive systems on different control systems and multiple press types over the past 10 years. The motivation to convert was the need to replace obsolete hardware and integrate these new drives [and new diagnostic capabilities] into Memphis’s existing HS control system.

John Staiano, Senior Vice President for Harland Simon, further commented, “We are extremely pleased The Commercial Appeal has continued to show their commitment to Harland Simon systems, support and workmanship.”

This drive upgrade follows ac drive conversions at Billings Gazette, Montana and Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, plus master drive upgrades at The Journal Times, Racine and Herald and Review, Decatur.
