A Major Expansion for Belfast Telegraph. 12th July 2006

The Belfast Telegraph is reaching the successful conclusion of a major expansion programme. This has involved the addition of two new Goss Colorliner presses and the significant upgrading of two existing presses comprising Colorliner towers added to the Metro units and folders. The work has all been carried out within the very tight confines of the existing building in Belfast city centre, working round the demands of maintaining production of not only existing titles but also new publications.

Of crucial importance to the successful implementation of this work were the systems supplied by Harland Simon, partly as an element of the Goss contract and partly contracted directly to the Belfast Telegraph.

The Harland Simon scope of supply has ranged from the specification and supply of electrical power distribution equipment to press controls and the Prima MS press management system. The original Rockwell Automation controls on the two existing presses were replaced and new Prima 6000 desks, identical to those on the new presses, were incorporated giving identical operator controls on all presses.

All presses are connected to the single Prima Management System providing full planning, monitoring and reporting facilities with of course, direct presetting of the Goss digital inkers which are integral to the new Colorliner units and have been retro-fitted to the existing Metro units. The capability to synchronise colour leads between presses has also been added, giving considerable improvement in production capability and flexibility, whilst a comprehensive video camera system enhances visibility in the very congested press hall.

Training of press operators and technicians has been a key element in the success of this venture and additional security is provided by the 24/7 ongoing remote support for all press controls and management systems, providing additional comfort to cope with “round the clock” production commitments.
