Sun-Times reaches full production at new plant
The Chicago Sun-Times
recently completed the transfer of printing from its downtown
letterpress facility to the new $120 million Ashland Avenue
web-offset plant. The plant is equipped with six Goss Newsliner®
and two Goss Universal presses all of which are controlled
by a comprehensive Harland Simon PRIMA system.
The Harland Simon
system provides direct digital presetting capabilities from
their own RIPSet
device which accepts files from the Eskofot/Eskonet page transmission
system. Full product planning, presetting, monitoring and
reporting facilities are provided within the PRIMA
management system which also features the advanced PRIMA
Esprit auto-impositioning system. The monitoring and reporting
facilities are soon to be expanded with the addition of a
totalizer system which will provide the installation with
plant-wide copy flow and counting capabilities.
The impressive
850 ft. long press hall features two PRIMA 4000 multi-function
press control consoles for each of the eight presses. Each
console provides all the controls, press and quality, for
press operation in a clear and user friendly design. The presses
all feature Harland Simon drive systems and unit controls,
the latter providing control not only for the unit functions
but also for the inking and spraybar dampening systems.
