The Canadian
Southam Groups large daily, The Gazette in Montreal,
has signed a major contract with Harland Simon. The order
includes a comprehensive press control equipment package,
which is one of the most important parts of the newspapers
ambitious plan to change over from letterpress to web offset
printing. This technological leap will provide the 220 years
old Gazette with one of Canadas most modern printing
plants, producing glorious offset colour.
The mechanical
package, supplied by PPSI, will include new 4-hi tower unit
additions and the replacement of all existing inkers on Goss
Metroliners. And to complete the modernisation project, Harland
Simon are equipping the presses with the latest shaftless
drive technology. Harland Simon will also supply a completely
new press control and computer systems package. Remote press
operation from four PRIMA consoles will facilitate the printers
tasks, as well as providing for greater efficiency and reduced
waste.

MS Press Management System selected by The Gazette includes
a full complement of modules, amongst others for production
planning and monitoring, impositioning and presetting. This
will improve print quality and reduce waste on press start-ups,
which is particularly beneficial considering the numerous
editions and colour supplements produced by The Gazette, in
addition to their daily print run of about 165,000 copies.
