| The
Commercial Appeal, Memphis
The
Commercial Appeal in Memphis (TN) awarded a significant contract
for a new centralised ink and damp control system to the leading
press control supplier Harland Simon. The contract involved
the replacement of the existing (PCS) system on four Goss
Metro Presses.
The package included
four new Harland Simon PRIMA
5000 Consoles which interface with Controls Group (CGI)
digital page packs and Ryco spray bar dampening systems. The
new consoles use information received directly from the RIP
to give extremely accurate presetting of the new digital packs.
The result is an easier start-up for each run and a reduction
in start-up waste. The PAR negative scanner became redundant
once the new system had been commissioned.
During the print
run the operators have available at their finger-tips the
full range of functionality of the PRIMA consoles. The consoles
allow adjustments to be made from the keyboard and laydown
area on the console, or from a touch screen. Water, ink and
compensators are quickly and easily adjustable to reduce printed
waste.
Using the PRIMA
Totaliser, the information gathered from the press and the
stream and stacker counters generate an excellent suite of
automatic and tailored reports. Since PRIMA Totaliser uses
Windows NT it easily interfaces with The Commercial Appeals
intranet and allows pressrun information to be monitored remotely
from home.
The addition
of Harland Simons powerful PRIMA
Esprit expert impositioning software provides a fast and
powerful impositioning and layout tool to optimise press efficiency.
Access to press impositioning information is made available
to the advertising department for colour ad positioning and
planning.
Jim Hamilton,
Director of Operations at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis
said, "We chose Harland Simon because they have the ability
to give us press controls using a standard platform. We have
the latest industry-standard PCs and Siemens PLCs. Their integrated
range of Windows NT based Management Information System products
gives excellent management reporting capabilities from standard,
flexible report writing tools."
This is an exciting
time for Harland Simon, representing the start of an ongoing
partnership with The Commercial Appeal. This installation
will be the benchmark for the future in press centralised
control systems for Metro and Metroliner press users.
