| Midland
News invest in Harland Simon technology
May 2004
Shropshire
Newspapers, part of Midland News Association, has embarked
on a major project to increase its colour printing capability
at its plant in Ketley, near Telford, England.
The project
involves the provision of new GOSS Colorliner towers and shaftless
folders forming the basis of two new press lines. The press
drives and controls are being provided by Harland Simon
as part of an extensive contract which will also involve the
upgrading and extension to the existing PRIMA Management
System. This part of the work will be undertaken by Harland Simon
Systems, the computer systems specialists within the Harland
Simon operation. Harland Simon will also be adding their
unique PRIMA Esprit automatic impositioning facility
to ensure Shropshire Newspapers can gain maximum benefits
from their enhanced printing capacity.
The PRIMA
Soft Proofing facility, already making a major contribution
to the quality of all MNA newspaper products will be expanded
to embrace the significant increase in colour and pagination
that the new presses will provide.
The Harland Simon
contribution to this project even extends beyond Ketley to
include the latest reel tracking technology, which will also
be installed at the other two MNA plants in Wolverhampton
and West Bromwich. This PRIMA Roll Tracking System
will enable the MNA Management to closely monitor all aspects
of performance related to the provision and utilisation of
newsprint from paper mill to newspaper production, including
financial monitoring.
The press
units will all be equipped with digital inkers enabling the
new Harland Simon PRIMA Consoles to provide the ultimate
in pre-setting performance. These consoles, employing the
latest Harland Simon touch screen technology, form the "visible"
front to a completely new drive and control system designed
to meet the latest requirements in terms of safety and efficiency.
"We
see this as a logical next stage of a long standing and successful
relationship between MNA and Harland Simon," says
Paul Liggins, MNA Group Technical Director,"
and by putting the entire electrical responsibility, including
design, manufacture, installation and commissioning with one
specialist company, we are confident of achieving a fully
co-ordinated and successful project. "
Tony White, Sales
Director of Harland Simon comments " Our proven ability
to co-operate closely with GOSS on complex newspaper press
projects and a long standing relationship with MNA has resulted
in Harland Simon being selected for this significant and prestigious
project."
With the first
deliveries of press and control equipment already underway,
readers of the Shropshire Star should expect to see the benefits
of the new technology by late summer 2004.
