| New
York Times to use Harland Simon for Product Optimisation
The New York Times, one of the world's leading newspapers,
has become the first to use Harland Simon's Esprit
and ColorWare
system to simplify and optimise the process of product layout.
The systems have been installed at the massive Edison and
College Point facilities, where eleven Goss Colorliner presses
produce the New York Times.
ColorWare
is a dynamic software tool to aid product planners in the
placement of colour pages within their newspapers, by continually
advising where colour pages can be placed as the newspaper
layout develops. By using ColorWare
the product planners in New York can be sure that they are
using the printing facilities to their fullest potential by
showing all available colour without generating products that
cause problems in the press halls.
Esprit
is an automatic imposition generator that calculates the best
way to lay out a product on a press. For the NYT project,
Harland Simon has configured the press capabilities for each
site as well as their preferred production methods. With this
in place, once a product requirement is given to Esprit,
it will generate the best way to configure the press to produce
the required newspaper. Esprit will also take into account
any parts of the press that are unusable and even the way
in which the press is currently webbed-up.
ColorWare
was first shown at NEXPO 2000 in San Francisco, where it made
an immediate impression on a number of newspapers, but most
noticeably the New York Times. An order was placed just before
Christmas 2000 and installation was completed in January this
year. After a couple of weeks of exhaustive testing by NYT's
imposition experts, the system has been rolled out to the
production and planning staff.
Harland Simon
expects to build on the success of this project at NEXPO 2001
where they will be demonstrating the system in its standalone
format on their own stand, but will also be on the Managing
Editor Inc stand with a system integrated into the ALS layout
system.
