Register Guard once again turn to Harland Simon - this time for
their Inserter Controls
Chicago, IL 18th January 2008
Harland Simon has once again started the new year on a high note, by signing
a contract with The Register Guard, Eugene, OR, for the replacement of their inserter controls
(ICON) on their three AM Graphic Inserters. The conversion will be carried out over the summer
period with all Inserters in full production by August 2007, without any disruption to Register
Guard’s busy production schedule.
The principle upgrade involves replacing the Goss ICON system with
Harland Simon’s InsertNet controls based on industry standard
PC and PLC hardware. In addition, their AMCS [Centralized Inserter Control System]
will be replaced by Harland Simon’s PRIMA Mailroom Manager.
This will oversee Insert Job orders, monitoring, hopper cycles for maintenance and
scheduled zone production by micro zips, truck routes and postal walks across all
three inserters. Furthermore, an interface to The Register Guards Advertising and
Circulation systems is included, with all route information stored and processed via
Mailroom Manager. To complete the upgrade, the GSN [Gripper Stacker Node]
station will be replaced, allowing centralized job data control of their Quipp 300
stackers supporting variable bundle size, rotation and exit belt selection.
At all times, the existing system will remain operational until the new
system is fully tested and commissioned, which eliminates any risk to production. This
method also keeps costs down whilst replacing all the vulnerable parts of the system.
The solution is based on Harland Simon’s press controls PressNet
techniques that have been successfully developed for the replacement of many press
systems over the past 10 years.
Rick Baker, Registers Guard’s General Manager commented, “We
chose Harland Simon because of the features in Mailroom Manager, their reputation in the
industry and our past experience with the Harland Simon Press Control system”.
This order follows on from Harland Simon’s replacement CCS system at The
Register Guard which interfaces directly into the Mitsubishi on-unit controls, thus providing
their production management and press operators with the tools to optimize production and reduce
waste. Furthermore, as The Register Guard already has Harland Simon PRIMA MS; this
will allow for further integration and combined scheduling software, allowing not only mailroom
integration into the press and pre-press area, but consolidated reports for maximum visibility.
John Staiano, Senior Vice President for Harland Simon, further commented, “Over
the next few years more and more newspapers will be upgrading [ as opposed to replacing] their
mailroom controls and adding state-of-the-art upper level management system; for Harland Simon
this was a natural progression of our products and services.”
