Harland Simon replaces Sabah Honeywell Control System 13th January 2006

Harland Simon finished 2005 on a high note as they completed the replacement of Honeywell control systems on an existing Goss Colorliner press. The conversion was carried out without any disruption to a busy production schedule. The project included replacement of the main press controls, installation of four Prima 6000 operator consoles and supply of a comprehensive suite of management system modules including direct ink presetting. 

The press is located at Merkez Gazete in Istanbul who publish the papers Sabah, Takvim and Fotomaç, 7 days a week with a national circulation in the order of 1,750,000 copies.

The project including development, engineering, installation and commissioning has been completed in just 5 months. Now that the controls have been converted Goss will commence commissioning of two additional Colorliner towers to significantly increase product size and colour content.

Harland Simon’s approach, which has retained the Honeywell I/O modules, has meant that the conversion required a minimum of fitting and wiring and could be carried out in small stages during the normal production downtime of the press. Once all the individual elements were proven the final conversion could take place. At all times the existing system remained operational while the new system was fully tested and commissioned which eliminated any risk to production. This method also keeps costs down whilst replacing all the vulnerable parts of the system. The solution is based on techniques that have been successfully developed for the replacement of many Allen Bradley systems over the past 10 years.

The decision to convert to Harland Simon was made on the basis of obtaining improved technical support and enhanced features such as automatic impositioning, comprehensive monitoring and reporting and ink presetting not only on the Colorliner press but also across the Goss HT presses which are already equipped with Harland Simon control systems.

Technical Director Sedat Yazar said “Clearly this was a major decision but we felt that in the long term it would be worth making the change. We had to trust Harland Simon to complete this major conversion and they haven’t let us down. They did a very successful job, no loss of production during the conversion and very helpful staff. ”
