The Star Phoenix, Saskatoon, choose Harland Simon to
upgrade their Press Controls
Chicago, IL 29th December 2007
Harland Simon has ended 2007, as it began, on a
high note, by signing a contract with The Star Phoenix,
Saskatoon, Canada for upgrading their press controls on their
Goss Universal with the latest Harland Simon technology –
PressNet. The conversion will be carried out over the summer
period with completion planned for July 2008. The project
includes replacement of the main press controls, upgrade of two
Prima consoles, replacement of the Allen Bradley MPU and a
clutch drive conversion. In addition, Star Phoenix will also
benefit from the latest comprehensive suite of management system
modules including direct ink presetting.
At all times, the existing system will remain
operational until the new system is fully tested and
commissioned, which eliminates any risk to production. This
method also keeps costs down whilst replacing all the vulnerable
parts of the system. The solution is based on techniques that
have been successfully developed for the replacement of many
Goss systems over the past 10 years.
Murray Hill, Saskatoon’s Production Manager – Pre Press,

us a significant saving in our Press operation and a boost in quality as we strive
to provide our customers with the best product possible.”

The decision to upgrade to Harland Simon was made on the basis of
replacing obsolete hardware, improved technical support and enhanced features
such as comprehensive monitoring, reporting and ink presetting with adapted
(learning) algorithms.
