Toronto Star
Another substantial
order for press control and computer systems has been placed
by Canadas leading newspaper, The Toronto Star. Just
eight years after one of MAN Rolands largest Colorman
press installations first went into production, each of the
six 40 metre long lines has received ten additional printing
couples. Harland Simon, the original electrical systems supplier
has delivered all the press control equipment needed. The
order included six additional PRIMA
press control consoles. The existing eighteen PRIMA consoles
have already been upgraded with new bright LCD colour touch
screens. That done, all 24 desks are now virtually identical,
making the operation of the presses much easier.
Equally important
is the completely new computer system. Our PRIMA
MS handles planning, controlling and monitoring of the
entire print production process. Off-site production monitoring
is also possible through the new PRIMA Intranet module. Furthermore,
the package includes a comprehensive press presetting programme.
The PRIMA
RIPSet system links the Stars pre-press RIP network
directly and automatically with platemaking. A tracking facility
displays a complete overview of RIPped pages at any stage
for any given scheduled product. Digital on-screen colour
proofing saves time and materials, as well as making it possible
to spot RIPping errors or missing image elements - before
the plates are produced.
Considering the
multitude of different editions, special interest sections
and inserts, the computer system handles a huge task. The
PRIMA
MS computer system communicates with the Toronto Stars
own plant-wide system on a UNIX operating platform. The entire
project in all its details has been completed on schedule.
Bearing in mind that all this work had to be accomplished
whilst day-to-day newspaper production continues unabated,
careful planning and professional execution of the project
were fundamental requirements.
