Turun Sanomat go
for the Latest Controls Technology. 4th September
2006
Turun Sanomat,
the major newspaper located in Turku, South West Finland
celebrated their Centenary in 2005 and more recently produced
their 35,000th edition. They are now looking forward
to even greater success over the years to come.
Always ready to
invest in the best technology to keep ahead of the game, they
were impressed by the latest control system demonstrated by
Harland Simon at last year’s IFRA exhibition in Leipzig. Within
a couple of months of the exhibition, an order had been placed
and by May 2006, commissioning was successfully completed and
they are already seeing some very real benefits from their
investment.
Having contracted
Harland Simon to up-grade the controls on two of their older
Goss Reelstands a few months earlier, Turun Sanomat were set to
take another major step towards increased efficiency and even
higher quality print performance and these objectives have now
been achieved.
The most obvious
changes involved replacing their 4 existing press control desks
with the latest Harland Simon Prima 6000 design. Less obvious
but equally important was the change of the main press control
system to the PC based PressNet design, resulting in improved
reliability and greatly enhanced diagnostic capabilities. At the
same time, the opportunity was taken to provide additional
facilities to the already proven Prima Management System,
including the provision of on-line colour proofing at each desk.
With Turun Sanomat’s emphasis on maintaining high print quality
throughout their entire production, this proofing system, which
obtains its data directly from Harland Simon’s own RIPSet
module, brings a level of consistency between presses not
previously possible. The smallest adjustment to the quality
settings at any of the control desks brings up an instantaneous
proof of that page on the colour calibrated screen behind the
copy lay down area on the desk. By simply rotating the proofing
screens through 90 degrees, the system automatically switches
from the regular broadsheet product to their tabloid
requirements.
The same RIPSet
module, as used for the colour proofing, also provides the data
for presetting the digital inkers and spray bars throughout both
presses, ensuring the capacity for a significant reduction in
start up waste.
All the work has
been carried out without any disruption to the normal daily
production commitments and training for both Production and also
Technical personnel was tailored to meet these commitments. The
comprehensive diagnostic facilities which are an inherent part
of the latest Prima system are proving to be an invaluable
assistance to the technicians.
Additional
security comes from the provision of computer standby facilities
for the main Prima Management System and RIPSet servers. Harland
Simon also provide 24/7 remote support utilising the VPN link to
their offices in Milton Keynes, UK and Chicago, IL.
Of particular
importance to Turun Sanomat is the close working relationship
established with Harland Simon personnel at all levels, which
has existed and been strengthened over many years of close
co-operation.
