Winnipeg Free
Press upgrade to Harland Simon APCS press controls
Chicago, 17th January 2007.
Harland Simon has started 2007 on a high note, by signing a
contract with Winnipeg Free Press, Canada, for the replacement
of their APCS press controls on their Goss Colorliner presses.
The conversion will be carried out over the summer period with
all presses in full production by July 2007, without any
disruption to Winnipeg’s busy production schedule. The project
includes replacement of the main press controls, installation of
four Prima 6000 operator consoles and supply of a comprehensive
suite of management system modules including direct ink
presetting.
The principles of the upgrade are that the APCS consoles are
replaced with PRIMA control consoles; all KFL, KFM, KP5, PIN
racks and Data Highway 2 are eliminated; existing unit and
folder receivers including DRINK racks are retained; existing
Drive Master PLCs upgraded to Ethernet; existing MAC and folder
receiver racks are retained, but, with a processor upgrade that
will allow main press communications and support interface
communication, previously dealt with by the PIN rack.
At all times, the existing system will remain operational until
the new system is fully tested and commissioned, which
eliminates any risk to production. This method also keeps costs
down whilst replacing all the vulnerable parts of the system.
The solution is based on techniques that have been successfully
developed for the replacement of many Goss systems over the past
10 years.
Andy Ritchie, Winnipeg’s Publisher commented, “Our present
press controls have done a good job for us for the last 15
years, but its now time to update them. This is part of our
overall commitment to modernizing our business”
The
decision to convert to Harland Simon was made on the basis of
replacing more obsolete hardware, improved technical support and
enhanced features such as comprehensive monitoring, reporting
and ink presetting with adapted (learning) algorithms.
Glenn Williams, Vice President of Operations & Production,
further commented, “We chose HS for a number of reasons:
Reliability – they do what they say they will do. Quality – we
researched numerous installs across the globe and all without
exception were very satisfied with the quality of components,
workmanship, and service. Knowledge – they are experts in press
controls and are recognized as such throughout the world.”
