Harland Simon has added job ticketing, estimating, invoicing and
analysis to their already popular suite of PRIMA MS modules to
create PRIMA Commercial MIS. The new system will allow customers
to take advantage of the power that MS has brought major
newspapers like Chicago Sun Times, Toronto Star and Wall Street
Journal; however, with the ability to estimate and quote for the
smallest of jobs.
The PRIMA
Commercial MIS provides the tools to:
-
Provide
quick and easy press set up, for greater efficiency and
capital equipment utilization
-
Allow
effective monitoring and control of production and resources
on a real time basis
-
Direct
management effort toward reducing waste and improving
efficiency by providing real time and reported information
-
Quote
History database stores previous quotes so they can be
retrieved, modified and updated with new prices; saved as
new quotes and used for cost studies
-
Job
estimates includes costing for Composition, Film, Paper,
Ink, Plate Changes, Press, Folding, Skids, Bundles, Cartons,
Inserting, Finishing, Mailing and Delivery
-
Job options
include multiple sections, multiple stocks and inks within
each section, multiple presses and multiple configurations
for plate changes
Areas of
Operation
The modules
that form PRIMA Commercial MIS fall into two areas of operation:
-
Production
Office
-
Press Hall
and Mail Room
Although PRIMA
Commercial MIS is available as a fully integrated system covering
all of
the factory areas, the modules for each area are also available
separately.
PRIMA
Commercial MIS in the Production Office
The production
office is at the center of the PRIMA Commercial MIS. It is here
that the initial production schedules are set up and subsequent
data analysis can be undertaken.
To begin with,
the user inputs information about the pending jobs such as
title, edition name, pagination, copy requirements and planned
run times. Once the production jobs are defined, the user is
able to allocate press slots for the jobs via the
production-planning module.
Jobs shown in
red are currently active on the press while those in green are
ready to run. Job details can be viewed simply by moving the
mouse pointer over the job. Template plans allow regular shift
plans to be set up quickly. Once production is underway,
progress can be monitored at any of the PRIMA Commercial MIS
terminals and even remotely, using web browsers (option price).

Views are
graphical and easy to understand and can be on a job or press
basis. Views update every few seconds and can be made available
to anyone on the network.

The industry
standard reports writer and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets are
used for analyzing data and producing reports. A set of
pre-configured reports are provided with the module, but the
user can also create new custom reports.
The quote
history database stores previous quotes so they can be
retrieved, modified and updated with new prices; saved as new
quotes and used for cost studies. Job options include multiple
sections, multiple stocks and inks within each section, multiple
presses and multiple configurations for plate changes.

PRIMA
Commercial MIS in the Press Hall and Mail Room
The press
operator interacts with PRIMA Commercial MIS via a large LCD
touch screen that can be mounted on the existing control
console. The screen enables the user to request job information,
input significant press events and monitor production. Real-time
speed and copy counts are displayed on the operator’s screen,
which are derived from sensors placed on the press line. Other
sensors, such as web break detectors, can also be included in
order to provide more detailed production analysis.

It is also
possible to see a detailed breakdown of copy counts.
Data
acquisition units are positioned conveniently in the plant to
pick up signals from existing sensors such as folder prox and
counters. PRIMA Commercial MIS has been designed to operate at
single and multi-site operations, consolidating production
information for consistent and accurate reporting.
