Harland Simon is now able to offer a practical, cost effective solution for the replacement of Honeywell Printa Control and Management Systems. The Harland Simon system provides a modern, flexible, expandable installation using industry standard hardware and software.The key to producing a workable solution is to replace all the “intelligent” parts of the system whilst
retaining all the “dumb” I/O.This allows for an installation process that will require no specific press downtime and keep costs to an acceptable level. However complete conversions can also be offered if required.

Proven Solution

Harland Simon are pleased to announce they have completed the replacement of a Honeywell control systems on an existing Goss Colorliner press.The project included replacement of the main press controls, installation of four Prima 6000 operator consoles and supply of a comprehensive suite of management system modules including direct ink presetting.

The Harland Simon Solution – What’s Involved

The Harland Simon solution focuses on removing proprietary and under-performing equipment and replacing it with current technology.The results are improved efficiency and a supportable control platform for the press. Crucially, production can be maintained throughout the upfrade process.

The diagram below shows a typical Printa system. For simplicity, we have only shown one example of the upper press, folder and units controls.The Honeywell Consoles and Operator Modules are replaced with Prima 6000 desks and the PC based PressNet control system.The Unit, Folder and Upper Press Process Modules are replaced by standard PLCs which communicate via Ethernet and then Bitbus to the retained Honeywell I/O blocks. For the upper level systems the PMS and PPS modules are replaced by the well established Prima Management System.

The installation is implemented in parallel with the existing system which means that the project can be completed within the restricted access periods typically available in the newspaper industry. At all stages the existing system can be re-installed providing a zero risk strategy. Once all elements are proven the final conversion and removal of old equipment can take place. If it is possible to shut sections of a press down for slightly longer periods we are also able to extend our solution to include the replacement of the dated proprietary I/O modules with modern standard PLC’s.
